Great Tew Estate
Full renovation of existing Historic buildings:
Coach House & Stable Block, Barn Renovation Office & feature Dovecote
Modern high-tech, energy-efficient building materials and techniques were combined with traditional materials and craftsmanship in the renovation of existing buildings within this Historic Estate.

Carrying through the characteristics of the other Historic Estate buildings was essential for this project. For the larger buildings, Welsh Blue-Grey slates were used throughout. These are an exceptionally durable, high-quality British material with a 100year-plus product life, and were specified in line with Listed Building Regulations to maintain the look and feel of the original roof covering.

The slates were laid on a high quality breathable membrane instead of traditional felt. This tough, hard-wearing man-made material is an energy-efficient green alternative to traditional roofing felt, and reduces condensation and the amount of ventilation required in the roof space.

Extensive lead-work was incorporated within the project both for design and durability. Traditional working methods were employed to produce handmade lead ‘Roll Profile’ ridges [including the steep pitch Dovecote], shaped lead valleys in place of modern guttering and lead sheeting to the Dormer windows. High-quality lead flashings were used on all roofs to waterproof edges, abutments and feature parapet walls.

Tri Iso Super 10 insulation is an extremely energy efficient insulation material and was laid as an extra layer under the breathable membrane. This requires extra treated-timber Counter Battening but provides increased insulating properties while having a minimum depth.

Alloy fixings were used throughout. Non-ferrous, long lasting fixtures which reduce the risk of nail sickness, increasing the life of the roof.

For the office building, the modern renovation of an existing barn used Imported Indian Stone Tiles - cut, shaped & sized stone tiles made from a single piece of stone. These offered more value than the limited supplies of Cotswold Stone available, but provided a suitably traditional look in keeping with the other historic buildings on the Estate. These cut-stone tiles are of varying size and are laid on a Diminishing Course using traditional methods, creating the historic look and feel.
